News "Don't talk to Rory Royston about recessions.
Since starting R&R Golf Carts in May 2010, the 22-year-old has watched the business explode from a humble repair shop run out of his garage to his current 22,000-square-foot operation near Sun City in Palm Desert.
It was me, my truck and garage, he recalled of the business' early days. I had $4,000 in my pocket.
Today, in addition to doing repairs, he sells a full range of electric golf carts, from customized carts with luxury car-style front ends to more standard lines.
We're building a Jeep golf cart, he said. We're putting a winch on the front; it looks cool.
The latest addition to the shop is a line of Swiss-made electric bikes that can go 20-40 miles on a single charge.
Why bikes? It's just we're interested in them, he said. We're really big into electronic stuff.
Royston is the first to admit his success has been unexpected and a little bit crazy.
All we're doing is fixing these carts and being nice to people, he said. I mean, we're not giving it away; we're at a correct price, and we stay with that margin.
In the meantime, while his summertime staff was lean, including fiance Jamie Hessling, Royston expects to at least double their numbers for the season.
But first, the couple are getting ready for a long overdue vacation next month to get married."
